About The League

The 10 members of the Bay State conference consists of Brookline, Framingham, Natick, Newton North and Wellesley in the Carey Division, along with Braintree, Milton, Needham, Walpole and Weymouth in the Herget division.1

Braintree, Milton, Walpole, and Weymouth do not have a boys team, and instead have boys that swim on their girls teams in the fall.

At the Bay State Conference Championships, each school may have up to four athletes per individual event and three relays per relay event. The top three placing athletes in individual events may score points, and the top two placing relays from each school may score points.

History

In 1958, the Bay State League was established.3

In 1990, Brookline and Newton North joined the league, and the conference was changed to two divisions. The leagues were named after Mr. Fran Carey and Mr. Fred Herget, and shall be considered Charter Divisional Members of the Bay State Conference. The divisions are named the Carey Division (large division) and the Herget Division (small division) of the Bay State Conference (BSC). Divisional placement is based completely on enrollment.3

In 1991, Framingham merged into one school, creating a void in the Herget Division of the BSC.3

In 1997, Weymouth was admitted to the Bay State Conference and placed in the Carey Division.3 4

In 2017, Carey division member Dedham High School left the Bay State Conference for the Tri-Valley League.1 Milton moved their swimming program from the winter to the fall, leaving the winter Bay State Conference.

In 2018, Carey division member Norwood High School left the Bay State Conference for the Tri-Valley League.1

In 2019, after the departure of Dedham and Norwood, the divisions were realigned with Newton North High School moving from the Herget division to the Carey division.1
